Why we do what we do

The State of the Global Climate 2024 Update issued by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), once again issued a Red Alert at the sheer pace of climate change in a single generation, turbo-charged by ever-increasing greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere.

2015 to 2024, will be the warmest ten years on record; the loss of ice from glaciers, sea-level rise and ocean heating are accelerating; and extreme weather is wreaking havoc on communities and economies across the world.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has said, "The scientific evidence is unequivocal: climate change is a threat to human wellbeing and the health of the planet. Any further delay in concerted global action will miss the brief, rapidly closing window to secure a livable future."

But there is a bright side. The world is on the cusp of a once-in-a-generation clean energy effort. The federal government of the United States has committed $8 Billion to fund regional hydrogen production hubs strategically placed throughout the country.

OneSix Energy is based in Detroit, Michigan, which is part of the Midwest Hydrogen Hub consisting of Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana. The hub will focus efforts around developing regional supply chains for the fuel source. The goal is to create a market for fueling trucks and heavy-duty vehicles with clean hydrogen, which comes without any tailpipe emissions.

We believe we are in the perfect place—at the perfect time—to bring our innovation to market as our beachhead for continued growth, throughout the U.S. and around the world. We’re committed to doing our part to make a tangible difference for our children, our world, and our future.

We invite you to join us as we help usher in the Age of Hydrogen.

How it All Began

Dan Darga, our co-founder & CTO, is a rocket scientist. It’s true. Over the past decade he’s led teams of NASA engineers to produce satellites designed to provide invaluable scientific insight ranging from life on earth, to the origins of the universe itself. Before coming to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to unravel the mysteries of the universe, Dan passionately pursued technologies to fight climate change as a Senior Principal Engineer for a clean-energy startup and Lead Engineer developing fuel cells for General Motors.

As you might expect from a typical rocket scientist working on clean energy, he became obsessed thinking there had to be a better way to produce hydrogen. These nagging thoughts gnawed at his brain, eventually producing the general concept of methane pyrolysis, unaware that it was already a thing. The more he thought, the clearer the solution became. He sketched out his idea, creating massive spreadsheets, performing complex calculations, and consulting industry experts in search of the fatal flaw that would uncover why nobody has taken this approach before – a search that continues to come up empty. Dammit, Jim, this idea just might work…

Talking through his idea with serial entrepreneur and tech-company advisor, Stefan Sysko, they decided it would be worth investing some time performing a ton of research on the clean-tech industry, and quickly realized there was opportunity lurking in Dan’s discovery.

Based in Detroit, Michigan the founders are proud to be in the thick of the Midwest Hydrogen Hub network. Good things are happening in the fight against climate change. OneSix Energy is poised to be an important contributor to the next generation of climate-tech.
